History & Events of Mary/Snow:

• Married by: Wm. Gibson, May 1791, Powell's Valley, NC, USA. Deposition of Mary Sanders widow for Widows Pension, Revolutionary War, of Solomon Sanders, private, NC Line, Continental Army.
...affiant a widow...was married to Solomon Sanders in the year A.D. Seventeen Hundred and Niny One in Powels Valley in what in now the County of Campbell Tennessee at the home of Junes Ally and she was married by on Wm. Gibson and it was in the month of May in the year above stated.
That she removed from Powels Valley to the State of Kentucky and then to where she now resides in the County of Grundy, Tennessee where she has resided for the space of 45 years past and where her husband died.

Marriage: deposition of Joshua Phipps for Mary Sanders, widow, Sep 1853, , Grundy, TN, USA. State of Tennessee, Grundy County:
...that Joshua Phipps aged 83 years past, he was well acquainted with Solomon Sanders, he first knew him in North Carolina, he moved to Powel's Valley Tennessee which was then part of North Carolina in 1791 and affiant were with him when he moved and he remembered the next spring he married Mary Sanders. This was the next year after they moved to Powel's Valley.
Affiant declare that he stayed in 1792 with the wife of Solomon Sanders-Mary Sanders who now is a neighbor to affiant, while he went back to North Carolina after his brothers wife the mother of Suthy and Thomas Sanders who now lives in this said County, That he was at the marriage of Solomon and Mary Sanders...he remembers that it was some time before the Indians took Curtis Slater in what is now Knox County, Tennessee-for Solomon Sanders had returned from North Carolina and after he had married awhile Jane Th_r and also states was between he thinks 1793. Signed: Joshua Phipps
Authors note: I found Joshua Phipps at the age of 83 in 1853 when he gave the deposition his memory was very good: 1792 was marked by both Cherokee and Creek raids into the territory. The national government...would not participate in a war against the southern Indians; neither would it permit the frontiersmen to make preemptive strikes, nor to pursue attacking Indians across the line into their own territory. The settlers could take defensive measures only. Such a response from the War Department and Congress infuriated the territorial settlers. Separate groups of unauthorized volunteers from the Holston and Cumberland leveled Cherokee and Creek villages and killed a number of warriors. On one of the few occasions when strikes against the Indians were authorized, acting governor Daniel Smith, in Blount's absence, sent General John Sevier with a regiment of militia into Cherokee territory in pursuit of a large body of Indians that had approached Knoxville but turned back after massacring the family of Alexander Cavett a few miles from town.
